There are few people in the entertainment industry who have made as big an impact on the lives of people the world over as Walt Disney. Fewer still have created an entertainment empire as large as the Walt Disney Company. From a talking mouse, to the largest theme resort in the world, it’s no wonder people of all ages know the name of Walter Elias Disney.

From Humble Beginnings

Born to Elias and Flora Call Disney in December of 1901, Walt spent some of his childhood in a small town in Missouri called Marceline. Marceline would later become the inspiration for the Magic Kingdom’s Main Street U.S.A. It was here that Disney found a passion in art, specifically drawing.

In 1917 during his freshman year of high school at the Chicago Art Institute, Walt began drawing patriotic cartoons for the school paper. Always patriotic he dropped out of high school to join the army only to be rejected because he was too young. Never one to give up Walt joined the Red Cross as a way of showing his pride in his country and was sent to France to drive an ambulance for a year.

In 1919 Walt moved back to Chicago with dreams of drawing political cartoons as a newspaper cartoonist, however, when no one would hire him Walt’s brother Roy managed to arrange a job for him with help from a bank colleague. The job was to create ads for movie theaters, magazines and newspapers. It was here that Disney met a man named Ubbe Iwerks whom he later created the Iwerk-Disney Commercial Artists company with. The company didn’t last long though and Disney started working for Kansas City Film Ad Company where he did work that would inspire in Disney an interest in animation.

After experimenting with cel animation, Disney, alongside Fred Harmon created a series of cartoons known as “Laugh-O-Grams” that were shown at a local theater. Through these cartoons Disney was able to get a studio of his own. However, with the cost of employees and Walt’s lack of money management skills the studio ended up going bankrupt. Later with his brother he was able to open a cartoon studio in Hollywood where he distributed his Alice Comedies. It was the beginning of Disney Brothers Studios. Among the new employees to Disney Brothers Studios was a young woman named Lillian Bounds, who was hired to ink and paint. In less than a year the two married. They later had a daughter named Diane Marie and adopted a daughter named Sharon Mae.

In 1927 Disney created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, an animation series distributed through Universal Pictures. Oswald was a great success. Disney then tried to arrange to receive higher pay per animation short but was unsuccessful when told that instead of raising his pay, they wanted to lower it. Because the majority of Disney’s staff was under contract, when he refused he lost all rights to the Oswald and most of his staff.

The Mouse and Other Animations

Oswald was hardly the end of Disney’s character animation. After losing his rights to the character Walt felt compelled to create a character to replace him. Basing his new character on a pet mouse he had as a child, Disney created what would become the most recognized cartoon character of all time. Mortimer Mouse was created but later renamed Mickey by Walt’s wife Lillian. She didn’t think Mortimer fit the personality that Disney was giving his character and Walt trusted her judgement. In 1932 Walt received his first Academy Award for Mickey Mouse. By 1935 Mickey was being filmed in color.

In 1934 Disney began planning the worlds first feature length animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Critics had little faith in the project and anticipated disaster in the future of the Disney Studio. The film was in production until the company ran out of money in 1937. After obtaining a loan from Bank of America to finish the project Disney was able to create what would become the first of over 50 full length animated theatrical films. The film earned over $8 million on it’s first release.

Carolwood Pacific Railroad

Since his childhood Walt Disney was a fan of steam powered trains. Ever the dreamer Walt decided to design and build his own miniature working railroad to run in his backyard. He named the railroad the Carolwood Pacific Railroad after the street his house was located on. The train track was 2,615 feet long and included a 90 foot tunnel.

The Most Magical Place On Earth

To say that there is no place in the world like a Disney park is an understatement. Opened to the public on July 18th 1955, Disneyland in Anaheim, California was the first of many theme parks to follow owned by the Walt Disney Company and to this day welcomes over 14 million guests a year. Disneyland owns the distinction of being the single Disney park that Walt himself was present for.

After the success of Disneyland, Walt began planning his Florida Project. Walt began purchasing what was at the time mostly swamp land in central Florida with plans of opening a Disney resort. Knowing that the cost of the land would be raised if he used his own name, Walt bought the land under the guise of dummy companies such as M.T. Lott and Ayefour Corp. He died before his project could be completed however so his brother Roy postponed his retirement in order to fufill the dream of his brother. Today Walt Disney World resort is the largest recreational resort in the world, larger than the city of Manhattan, and includes four theme parks, two water parks, 18 hotels, a several other attractions such as a NASCAR driving experience and golfing.

Besides Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida there are three other resorts around the world. Tokyo Disney opened in April of 1983, Disneyland Paris opened in April of 1992, and Hong Kong Disneyland opened in September of 2005.

Life After Death

Walt Disney died on December 15th, 1966, but that hasn’t stopped his legacy from living on. The Walt Disney Company continues to create blockbuster films, parks, and television and is showing no signs of stopping any time soon as the largest entertainment company in the world.
