Background and Company History of Walmart
Walmart first opened it’s doors as a discount retail store in 1962, in Rogers, Arkansas. The initial 95% of the money needed to create the first Walmart store came directly from Walmart’s founder, Sam Walton, and his wife Helen. Sam’s Club first opened in 1983 and the first Supercenter came in 1988. Walmart stock was offered on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time in 1972. The extra capital allowed Walmart to rapidly expand, growing to 276 stores spanning 11 states by the end of the 1970s.
Walmart now has 8,446 retail units in 15 different countries with annual sales over $400 billion, continuing to expand each year.
