Background and Company History of Verizon Wireless (VZW)

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture business company. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J., it is a a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, NASDAQ:VZ) and Vodafone (NASDAQ and LSE: VOD). Providing the Mobile to Mobile calling family of more than 80 million subscribers in the United States, Verizon Wireless (or VerizonWireless) company offers customers with the highest level of satisfaction by offering quality products and services.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ), headquartered in New York, is a global leader in delivering broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. It is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Verizon Communications Inc. was formed in 1983 as Bell Atlantic, part of the 1984 AT&T breakup into seven Baby Bells.

In 1995, Bell Atlantic and NYNEX merged to create Bell Atlantic – NYNEX Mobile. In 1997, a new Bell Atlantic was formed and their wireless subsidiary was renamed Bell Atlantic Mobile. Bell Atlantic Mobile and NYNEX Mobile Communications was created from Advanced Mobile Phone Service, Inc., a subsidiary of AT&T which was created in 1978 to provide cellular services.

In June 1999, AirTouch Communications of San Francisco, California merged with UK-based Vodafone Group Plc forming Vodafone AirTouch Plc. In September of the same year, Vodafone AirTouch announced a $90-billion joint venture with Bell Atlantic Corporation to be called Verizon Wireless, which would comprise the two companies’ wireless assets: Bell Atlantic Mobile and AirTouch Paging.

Verizon Wireless operates America’s most reliable wireless network, serving more than 93 million customers nationwide. Verizon also provides converged communications, information and entertainment services over America’s most advanced fiber-optic network, and delivers innovative, seamless business solutions to customers worldwide. Verizon employs a diverse workforce of more than 195,000.

Vodafone is the world’s leading international mobile communications group with equity interests in 31 countries across five continents and around 40 partner networks worldwide. As of June 30, 2010, Vodafone had approximately 347 million proportionate customers worldwide.

By late 2009, Verizon Wireless began ads that made use of the iPhone and officially released the Motorola Droid. In 2010, it launched its latest ad campaign with the tagline “Rule the Air” boasting Verizon’s superior ability to “send a strong signal.” Other ads also featured Verizon’s range of smartphones-powered Android.
