Austria is extremely well known for their haute ski resort towns, with hotels from the charming to the over-the-top, and some of the most talked about après ski opportunities in the world. The following five villages or areas are some of the country’s finest opportunities for your next Austrian ski vacation. Multiple ski resorts surround many of the towns, and many share lift tickets, giving skiers and snowboarders the option of switching mountains during their stay.

Kitzbuhel is a resort town in the Brixental valley in the Kitzbuhel district. The area is situation 794 meters above sea level, which is the highest point of the Brixental valley. In the winter, the area attracts skiers to SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser, hiking trails and toboggan runs. Kitzbuhel is one of Austria’s busiest, most classic ski towns and attracts the best of the best during the winter season.

Lech Ski Resort is best for expert and intermediate skiers, but is rated as very good for snowboarders and beginners. An all-around excellent resort is hard to come by, but Lech, and neighboring Zurs, share the Arlberg Pass nicely, giving skiers the opportunity to experience over 260 kilometers of trails with over 34 ski lifts.

Saalbach is one of the largest and most-visited ski resorts in Austria. It is known for its trails, backcountry skiing, north and south side mountain skiing, sunny weather and after ski nightlife. The off-trail skiing is primarily located on the north side of the mountain, which is left powdery light because of its solar orientation. The resort is primarily for skiers. There is a small snowboard area in Hinterglemm, however nearby Leogang has more opportunities for the riding community.

Seefeld, Austria is known for its cross-country skiing. The 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympic games were held in the ski community, as well as the 1985 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and three World Cup competitions. The downhill ski area of the mountains are good for beginners, great for intermediate skiers, and a smaller challenge for expert skiers. Mosern resort is a neighbor to Seefeld, and often, combination lift tickets can be purchased for skiing on both mountains.

Gastein Valley is an area that collectively includes four ski resorts, Stubnerkogel-Angertal-Schlossalm, Dorfgastein-GroBarl, Graukohel and Sportgastein. Within these four resorts are 200 kilometers of trails for beginners, intermediates or experts. The mountains have family-style hills, carving areas, deep-powder areas and mogul runs. The resort is typically open from late November until the end of April, depending on weather conditions.
