The New Seven Wonders of the World
The list of “The New Seven Wonders of the World” was announced on the seventh day of the seventh month, year 2007. It was voted for by people from all over the world. It supersedes the original “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.”
The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall began construction during the Qin Dynasty, 22 B.C. to 206 B.C., under the first Sovereign Emperor of China, Qin Shihuang. It is made from rocks, stones, bricks, and packed-earth. It has a width of 4.5 to 9 meters and up to 7.5 meters in height. A dangerous work, thousands of the builders died whilst on the job. During the Ming Dynasty (1368 A.D.-1644 A.D.), the Great Wall was extensively repaired in an attempt to keep out Mongolian invaders. The longest construction ever built, there are approximately 7,300 kilometers of wall in total. Many sections have disappeared.
Chicken Itza
Located in Mexico, Chicken Itza was the ceremonial center of the Maya people from around A.D. 550 to A.D. 800. One preserved ruin is the building, Temple of Kulkulkan. The temple is a flat-topped, square-based pyramid with 91 steps up each side, symbolizing one step for each day of the year, with the top of the pyramid representing the 365th day. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, when the Sun is directly above the equator, shadows are cast on the sides of the pyramid giving the effect of a serpent slithering down the steps. Kulkulkan was a Maya god who appeared in carvings like a giant serpent.
The Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is in Agra, India. Made of bright marble and famous for its 73-meters tall dome, the building was started in 1632. It was built as a memorial six months after the death of Mumtaz Mahal, favorite wife of then India’s ruler, Shah Jahan. It was built by the Jumna River, near his palace.
Petra
Located in Jordan, Petra is a beautiful city made up of buildings deeply carved into a desert rock. People lived there around 1200 B.C. Petra was one of the most important cities during Ancient Greek and Roman times, the area now called the Middle East. Traders from all over the world – Europe, Asia and Africa – traveled there to transact regular business.
Machu Picchu
Located high up in the Andes, Peru, Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century by the Incas, an ancient civilization. The Incas were master builders. Although they had only basic tools and not a mortar to fit the giant rocks together, the stones of their buildings were cut so precisely they fitted together perfectly.
The Colosseum
Located in Rome, Italy, the Colosseum is an ancient amphitheater with an oval-shaped arena. It was opened to the public in 80 A.D., designed to hold up to 50,000 spectators for exciting wild animal shows or watch gladiators fighting to death. The upper story was added in 82 A.D.. There are 80 entrances. The Colosseum remains to be an impressive building despite earthquakes that have damaged it.
Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer is a famous statue of Jesus Christ located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is an imposing open-armed statue of Christ measuring 38 meters tall and towers over the city of Rio de Janeiro. Taking five years to build, it was created by sculptor Paul Landowski in 1931 and the newest of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Although none of these seven structural wonders are brand new in the real sense, they are all still around.
