History of the St. Louis Rams

Where did St. Louis Rams get their name and why are they called it?
The St. Louis Rams were named in 1937 when Homer Marshman and Dam Wetzel became the owner and general manager, respectively, of the new team. Wetzel’s favorite football team was the Fordham Rams, and the two agreed that the new team name should be the St. Louis Rams.

1. Tom Mack – Offensive Guard
Tom Mack played his entire professional career with the Rams when the team was still based in Los Angeles. He was drafted in 1966 and remained a Ram until his retirement in 1978. These were good years for the Rams as a franchise, and Mack had a lot to do with the team’s success. In addition to his achievements as a Los Angeles Ram, Mack was an eleven-time Pro Bowl selection, a four-time First-Team All-Pro selection and a four-time Second-Team All-Pro selection.

2. Norm Van Brocklin – Quarterback
Norm Van Brocklin began his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams in 1949. He remained with the team until he became a Philadelphia Eagle in 1958. Together with Bob Waterfield, the team’s other quarterback, Van Brocklin se a handful of records and let the team in some excellent seasons.

3. Kurt Warner – Quarterback
Kurt Warner began his career as a Green Bay Packer. He was an undrafted free agent at the time, however, after the summer training camp, he was released from the team. After his unsuccessful NFL debut, Warner signed with the Iowa Barnstormers Arena Football League. In 1998, he finally got an opportunity to be signed by an NFL franchise team, the St. Louis Rams. His first seasons with the team quickly catapulted him to stardom, and the label as the best quarterback the Rams had ever had on their team. With four Pro Bowls and two First-Team All-Pro titles under his belt, Warner played an excellent game with the Rams before he signed with the New York Giants in 2004.

4. Merlin Olsen – Defensive Tackle
Merlin Olsen was signed as a Los Angeles Ram in 1962, following his college years at Utah State University. In the same year, he was named NFL Rookie of the Year; he was off to a good start. Olsen remained a Ram until his professional retirement in 1976. While he was with the team he secured 14 Pro Bowl appearances, six First-Team All-Pro appearances and three Second-Team All-Pro appearances.

5. Jack Youngblood – Defensive End
Jack Youngblood was a career-long Los Angeles Ram. He was drafted in the first round of the 1971 NFL draft; Youngblood was only 21 years old. He proved to be a successful defensive player, earning the title of NFC Defensive Player of the Year by United Press International in 1975, just four years after starting his career. Youngblood was a seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time First-Team All-Pro player. Sacks weren’t recorded in the NFL for the first 11 seasons of Jack’s career, but his final three seasons, during which he recorded 24 sacks, are telling enough about the Defensive End. Quarterbacks feared him.
