History of the Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners team was founded in 1977 as part of the Western Division of the American League. They have played at the King Country Domes Stadium (nicknamed the “Kingdome”) from 1977 to 1999. From 1999 to present, the Mariners have played in the newly built Safeco Field. The team has not yet won any World Series Championship titles. They won the West Division title in 2001, 1997 and 1995, but never advanced to the American League Championship Series.

5. Randy Johnson
Randy Johnson played for a number of MLB teams, but he spend the longest stint with the Seattle Mariners, from 1989 until 1998. In his entire career, from 1988 through 2009, Johnson was a solid pitcher, nicknamed “The Big Unit” after he crashed headfirst into an outfielder during practice one day. Johnson was for a long time the tallest player in the game, standing at 6’-10”. During his entire career, he was a ten-time All-Star selection and five-time Cy Young Award winner (four times with the National League and once with the American League). He was the 2001 Word Series MVP, a series in which he helped the Diamondbacks of Arizona to a World Championship title. He pitched a no-hitter with the Mariners in 1990, but managed to top this achievement by pitching a perfect game in 2004 for the Diamondbacks.

4. Jamie Moyer
Jamie Moyer began his MLB career with the Chicago Cubs, then played for the Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals and Baltimore Orioles before briefly playing for the Red Sox, and finally ending up in Seattle, where he spent 11 seasons from 1996 to 2006. His two best pitching seasons were in 2001 and 2003, when his Win-Loss records were 20-6 and 21-7, respectively. In 2003, he was recognized for his outstanding achievement by wining the Roberto Clemente Award and being selected for the All-Star game.

3. Ichiro Suzuki
Ichiro Suzuki began playing for the Seattle Mariners in 2001, after playing for the NPB (Japanese Baseball League) from 1992 to 2000. With the NPB he was a seven-time All-Star Selection and three-time Pacific League MVP. He was the NPB Batting Champion seven times, the NPB Safe Hit Champion five times and the NPB On-Base Champion five times. He won the MPB Golden Glove Award seven times and was four-time IBM Player of the Year. He won the Japan Professional Sports Grand Prize three times and won the Japan Series (World Series equivalent) in 1996. This was all before he traveled to the United States to play for Seattle.
Since beginning with Seattle in 2001, Ichiro has been a ten-time All-Start selection, ten-time Gold Glove Award recipient, three-time Silver Slugger Award recipient, two-time MLB Batting Champion and seven-time MLB Hits Leader. He holds dozens of offensive and defensive records and continues to play for Seattle (as of 2010).

2. Edgar Martinez
Edgar Martinez played for the Seattle Mariners from 1987 until 2004, during his entire MLB career. During this time, he was the team’s designated hitter and third baseman, garnering seven All-Star selections and five Silver Slugger Awards. In 2004 he won the Roberto Clemente Award, given to the teammate that “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team.”. In 2007, after his retirement from the sport, he was inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame.

1. Ken Griffey Junior
Ken Griffey Junior played for the Seattle Mariners from 1989 (his rookie season) until 1999. He played for the Cincinnati Red and the Chicago White Sox through 2008, and then once again played for Seattle from 2009 to 2010. During his entire career, he hit enough home runs to place himself as the fifth highest home run hitter in the history of the sport. He was a 13-time All-Star player and ten-time Gold Glove Award winner. He won the Silver Slugger Award seven times. He also tied the MLB record for most consecutive games with a home run.
