Lesson 4: Plane Fun

Purpose: To show and assess how well students have learned the scientific method

Students should be able to:
1. Identify a question to study and develop a hypothesis
2. Record, analyze and describe data
3. Produce a 3 paragraph paper on investigation

Materials:
1. Different weights of paper (notebook, construction, printer and cardstock)
2. Scissors
3. Internet or library resources

To execute lesson:
1. Utilizing the internet or library resources have student research airplanes finding enough background information on how planes fly, and principles of flight

2. Have students develop a hypothesis based on their research and the types of paper available

3. Students should develop a procedure indicating step-by-step instructions of how they would test their hypothesis

4. Students conduct their test, recording their data on a chart they have developed

5. Have students turn their data into a graph

6. Students should take their data, turning their data into two additional paragraphs, which explain their procedures, describe their data, if their hypothesis was supported, why or why not, finally including a statement of what they would do differently if the test was conducted again.

7. If time permits have students test what they believed they could change

8. Students should type or handwrite a 3 paragraph paper
