Science Lesson 1: Cell Analogy Magic Book Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Cell Analogy Magic Book
Purpose: Create a visual that will help students relate cell structures to their functions.
Students should be able to:
1. Explain the role of the cell functions
2. Understand that analogies can be used to represent cell functions
3. Relate cell structures to basic cell functions.
Materials:
1. Teacher notes on cell structures and cell functions (i.e. power point, textbook readings etc…)
2. Outline pictures of animal and plant cells
3. Large white paper of 18” x 12” and one – 9” X 12” white paper
4. Colored pencils, markers, glue, scissors
To execute lesson:
1. Teachers should prepare a presentation on each part of the cell and its main function
a. Cell parts include (cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, chromosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosome, Golgi bodies, mitochondria, Lysosome, vacuole, chloroplast and cell wall)
b. Cell functions for each of the parts above should be included in the power point
c. For each part include a slide that has the function. You will want to create an analogy or two to use as examples and to help students come up with their own analogies as you take notes.
i. Example: Vacuole –
1. function: holds water in the cell
2. what is it like: a rain barrel
3. How it is like it: The vacuole is like a rain barrel because it collects and holds water until it is needed by the cell.
2. Create a simple table note sheet with four columns and enough rows for each part. The columns should be labeled (Name of Organelle) (Its Function) (What It Is Like) (How It is Like It)
3. To teach lesson:
a. First have students take notes on the notes sheet you created as you present your presentation.
b. Either as you give the notes or after completing the notes have the students go back and answer for each part what is it like and how it is like it
c. Now create the magic book. This is a common foldable to make. You can find instructions on the internet if you need to see a visual.
i. Take 1 18” X 12” sheet of white paper and 1 9” x 12” white paper
ii. Cut the 9” X 12” paper in half long ways
iii. Next Fold the 18” x 12” paper in half then in half again
iv. Unfold the 18” x 12” so that it is only half folded
v. You will be cutting 6 slits in the paper – so from the folded end cut to the half way mark of the folded in half 18” x 12” paper
vi. Take the two half’s of the 9” X 12” paper and weave them through the slits you cut in the large paper
d. Have students create the magic book
i. Front Cover: Should be illustrated have a title and your name
ii. Left Inside Cover:
1. Top: Draw and label the parts of an animal cell (you should include all cell parts from you note sheet)
2. Bottom: Draw a Venn diagram that compares/contrasts a plant and animal cell.
iii. Right Inside Cover:
1. Top: Draw and label the parts of a plant cell.
2. Bottom: Illustrates the levels of organization from a cell to an organism.
iv. Middle: (The “MAGIC” part)
1. Left side: Name of the cell part and describe its function
2. Right side: Analogy Analogous picture (example: You might draw a rain barrel for the vacuole).
4. Students should be assessed using a rubric you create for the Cell Analogy Magic Book.
