Where did San Diego Chargers get their name and why are they called it?

1. Dan Fouts – Quarterback
Dan Fouts was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the third round of the 1973 NFL Draft. He led the team to a number of playoff games and was awarded as the player of the year on several occasions. Fouts remained with the team until his retirement from professional football in 1987. During his career, he was a three-time All-Pro selection and six-time Pro Bowler. He was named part of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team and was named the 1983 Pro Bowl MVP. Fouts was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, and his number, 14, was retired by the San Diego Chargers.

2. Kellen Winslow – Tight End
Kellen Winslow was a career-long San Diego Charger, originally drafted by the team in 1979 as the thirteenth overall pick in the NFL Draft. In 1980 and 1981, he held the league record for receptions and held a number of receiving records within the Chargers history as well. He was a five-time Pro Bowler, a three-time First-Team All-Pro selection and was named to the Chargers Hall of Fame. Winslow was also part of the NFL 75th Anniversary Team and the 1980s NFL All-Decade Team. In 1995, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

3. Charlie Joiner – Tight End
Charlie Joiner was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the 1969 NFL Draft. He initially played for the Houston Oilers, then the Cincinnati Bengals, and finally, in 1976, the San Diego Chargers. It was in San Diego that he remained until he retired from pro football in 1986. He was a three-time Pro Bowler and started in 203 of his 239 career games played. In 1996, Joiner was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

4. Lance Alworth – Wide Receiver
Lance Alworth was drafted during the first round of the 1962 NFL draft, and in the second round of the 1962 AFL Draft. He signed with the AFL San Diego Chargers, and played with the team until 1970. During his time in Dan Diego, and later in 1971 and 1972 with the Dallas Cowboys, Alworth was a seven-time All-Start selection, and a seven-time All-AFL selection. He was named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team, and was inducted into the San Diego Charger’s Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

5. LaDanian Tomlinson – Running Back
LaDanian Tomlinson was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played for the team through the 2009 season, signing on with the New York Jets at the beginning of the 2010 season. After being drafted, Tomlinson immediately became a starter for the team, setting records in his wake the entire time he remained in San Diego. Thus far in his career, he has been a five-time Pro Bowler, a four-time All-Pro selection, an NFL MVP and the NFL Best Player Award. He was named to the NFL 2000s All-Decade team as well.

Tailgating Rules
Per San Diego Municipal Code 59.0502, it is unlawful to:
- Intentionally throw, discharge, launch, or spill any solid object (including footballs, baseballs, frisbees and other such devices) or liquid substance, or otherwise cause such object or substance to be thrown, discharged, launched, spilled, or to become airborne.
- Explode, set-off, discharge, or otherwise release or cause to be released, any smoke bomb, fireworks, stink bomb, or other substance which is physically harmful or otherwise irritating, offensive, repugnant or disgusting to the eyes or sense of smell.
- Participate in any activity, including, but not limited to vehicle driver training, running, jogging, volleyball, baseball, soccer, football, roller blading, roller skating, bicycle riding, skate boarding, or frisbee unless expressly authorized by the QUALCOMM Stadium manager.
- Lead, conduct, or otherwise bring or allow to remain in the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility any animal, bird, fish, or reptile except trained guide, signal, or service animal that is in actual use.
- Bring or attempt to bring a vehicle into the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility without paying the prescribed charge, if any, required for admission. On the day of, during, and for eight hours after any event duly designated by the City Manager as an overflow capacity event, no person shall enter or attempt to enter the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility without presenting a valid ticket or pass to that event, or a pass indicating that the person is an on-duty employee working the event, or a control number for that event issued by the San Diego Police Department pursuant to the QUALCOMM Stadium policy governing distribution of non-commercial literature in the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facilities during such events; provided, however, that notices of such prohibition shall be duly posted at least twenty-four hours prior to the event and remain posted throughout the event and the eight hour period thereafter.
- Park or stand any vehicle in more than one parking space or, where applicable, in more than one tailgate parking space. If the vehicle exceeds twenty feet in length, the driver thereof shall only park said vehicle in parking spaces for standard size vehicles and pay for the additional space and display evidence of such payment unless parked in a tailgate parking space.
- Utilize in any manner more than the parking space or tailgate parking space that his vehicle is entitled to occupy under the provisions of this division 5, or place any vehicle in the inner ring of the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility.
- Interfere in any manner with the use of an adjacent parking space.
- Remain within the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility more than two hours after the conclusion of any event occurring within QUALCOMM Stadium or in the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility. It is unlawful for any person to refuse to obey the lawful order of a police officer, or QUALCOMM Stadium security personnel made pursuant to enforcement of this section 59.0502(a)(9).
- No person shall have, possess, or use any container made wholly or partly of glass that issued for carrying or holding any liquid for drinking purposes, without first obtaining permission from the Stadium Management.
- Bring, or cause to be brought, for the purposes of sale or barter, or have for sale, or sell or exchange, or offer for sale, or exchange any food, drink, service, goods, wares, ticket, or merchandise within any portion of the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility, including the perimeter sidewalk of QUALCOMM Stadium without first having obtained a City business license and permit from the QUALCOMM Stadium manager.
- Notwithstanding the provisions of section 59.0502(a)(10), no person shall bring, or cause to be brought a beer keg for purposes other than sale or barter, or have for sale, or sell or exchange, or offer for sale or exchange, without first obtaining proof of liability insurance in an amount and form satisfactory to the City Manager and a keg permit from the QUALCOMM stadium manager.
- The walkways or promenades in the inner circle of QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility are restricted to pedestrian traffic. It is unlawful to place tables, barbecues, chairs, umbrellas, or other objects on the walkways or promenades without the written permission of the QUALCOMM Stadium manager.
- Sections 59.0502(a) through (c) shall not apply to any duly authorized employee, agent, or officer of QUALCOMM Stadium or the City of San Diego while acting in the course and scope of employment, nor shall it apply to any duly authorized participant, performer, official, QUALCOMM Stadium security personnel, or service personnel specifically authorized to perform such an act by the QUALCOMM Stadium manager, or the City of San Diego while acting in the scope of employment or participation.
- Vehicles parked in violation of sections 59.0502(a)(6), (a)(7), or (a)(8), may be towed at the owner’s expense to a place designated by the City Manager.
- For purposes of the California Vehicle Code, all surfaced areas of the QUALCOMM Stadium parking facility, on which vehicles normally travel to enter and leave parking spaces and tailgate parking spaces, shall be considered to be “highways” as defined in Vehicle Code section 360.

For the comfort and safety of everyone, bags larger than 12”, large coolers, bottles, cans, guns, weapons, sticks, inflatable objects, laser pointers, flammable objects, stun guns, fireworks, lawn furniture, spray bottles, beach balls, frisbees, musical instruments, boomerangs, knives, mace and pepper spray, chains, balloons, sports balls, water guns, noise making devices, bicycles and skateboards, illegal drugs, outside alcoholic beverages, umbrellas and any items deemed inappropriate by management are prohibited from entering the stadium.
