A par means you hit exactly what the stats said you should for the hole, a bogey means you were 1 stroke over what you should have hit for the hole, and a birdie means you put the ball in the hole in 1 stroke less than par. There are many types of matches such as stroke plan, skins, or team play, all of which have a unique set of rules.
