Prophecies of the Bible That Have Been Fulfilled
What is Bible Prophecy?
Biblical prophecy is most often defined as predictions for the future found in the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. Prophecies are sometimes conditional on explicit or implicit circumstances. There are prophecies spoken by people speaking on behalf of God and others spoken directly by God. In the Hebrew Scriptures, many prophecies have to do with blessings or curses that may befall the Israelites depending upon their adherence to God’s laws in the Promised Land. In the Christian Scriptures, prophecies generally revolve around the coming of a Messiah and the “end times” of the world.
There are major disagreements between Christians and Jews about which Bible prophecies have been fulfilled. Christians believe that prophecies concerning a Messiah were fulfilled in Jesus. You can read what prophecies were fulfilled by Jesus in the article titled, Prophecies fulfilled by Jesus.
List of Prophecies that have Been Fulfulled
Statements by God in Genesis, Exodus and Deuteronomy predict that Abraham and his descendants will conquer the land of Canaan and take it for an “everlasting possession.” Joshua and the Israelite army began this conquest 40 years after the Israelites left Egypt, and it was completed many years later under the reign of King David.
In Leviticus and Deuteronomy, God predicts that the Israelites will be scattered among the nations and suffer many calamities in exile. This started happening slowly with small conquests of parts of ancient Israel and Judea and then in a dramatic fashion after the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and burned down the second Holy Temple. The tribes of Israel did indeed become scattered all over the world and during a 2,000-year period, were subject to myriad persecutions, ranging from pogroms and mass expulsions to the Nazi genocide. Even after the establishment of the State of Israel, millions of Jews remain in exile.
In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet is told by God to predict to King Zedekiah that if he persists in his rebellion against Babylon he will be captured and handed over to the Babylonian king following the conquest of the Holy Land. Indeed, according to the book of Kings, Zedekiah was later taken prisoner and blinded by the king of Babylon and died in captivity.
Jeremiah prophesied that the Babylonian captivity would last 70 years. The captives started returning to the Holy Land 68 years after the captivity began. It is generally believed that 70 represented a round number. This applies also to Jeremiah’s prophecy that Babylon would fall at the end of those 70 years; the Persians conquered it about 66 years after the start of the exile. He also predicted that Babylon would never again be inhabited, and this is so far the case. Also fulfilled was his vision that after the Babylonian conquest, the city of Jerusalem would lie in ruins; and that eventually there would be heard “the sound of joy and the sound of gladness” once again in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, a prophesy that came true after 1948. This repopulation also is seen as a fulfillment of prophecies in Deuteronomy and Ezekiel predicting that the Jews would one day return to their land.
Ezekiel prophesied that Egypt would lose its status as a regional superpower, never to be a ruling nation again. Indeed, once Egypt began faltering as a power during later biblical times, it did not regain its earlier splendor and was occupied for centuries by a string of foreign countries until gaining independence. Since ancient times, it has never again been a real regional power.
The prophet Daniel predicted the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, which did occur at the hands of the Romans once the city and the holy building were once again established after the end of the Babylonian exile. Christians also believe that Daniel’s “prophecy of the 70 weeks” accurately foretold the crucifixion of Jesus after 69 seven-year periods – or a rounded 70 “weeks” – after the ruler of Medea-Persia proclaimed that the Jews could return to the Promised Land to rebuild their Holy Temple. Here, “weeks” is understood as “years.”
