Nissan North America – U.S. Manufacturing

Nissan has three production plants in the United States – in Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi. Production at Nissan’s Smyrna Plant began in June 1983. The vehicle assembly plant has an annual production capacity of 550,000 vehicles and represents a capital investment of $2.5 billion.

The vehicle assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, began producing vehicles in May 2003. The $1.4 billion plant now produces the Nissan Altima, Nissan Quest, Nissan Armada, Nissan Titan and Infiniti QX56. The plant has an annual production capacity of 400,000 vehicles.

History of Nissan

Nissan Motor Company, Ltd., shortened to Nissan, is a multinational automaker headquartered in Japan. It was formerly a core member of the Nissan Group, but has become more independent after its restructuring under Carlos Ghosn.

It formerly marketed vehicles under the “Datsun” brand name. As of August 2009, the company’s global headquarters is located in Nishi-ku, Yokohama. In 1999, Nissan entered a two way alliance with Renault S.A. of France, which owns 43.4% of Nissan while Nissan holds 15% of Renault shares, as of 2008. The current market share of Nissan, along with Honda and Toyota, in American auto sales represent the largest of the automotive firms based in Asia that have been increasingly encroaching on GM, Ford and Chrysler. In its home market, Nissan is the third largest car manufacturer, with Honda being second by a small margin and Toyota in a very dominant first.

Timeline of Nissan Motor Company 1914-2010

1914: The First Dotsun is Built

1933: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., is established in Japan.

1937: The Datsun Type 15 is the first mass-produced Japanese vehicle.

1958: The First Datsun Sedan arrives in the US. The 1200 Sedan has 48hp 1200cc engine

1959: The first Dotsun Compact pickup is sold in America. This quarter ton pickup establishes Datsun in the US market.

1960: Nissan Motor Corporation USA is established in Gardena, California. Datsun’s first sports car is born and called the SPL 210. The 4 seat roadster has a fold down soft top with side curtains, 4 on the floor, and a 48hp 1200 cc engine that would soon after be upgraded to the 85hp version.

1962: The Bluebird is the first Datsun with a full synchronized 3 speed transmission. It is the first Datsun to have two-tone pain, wide white wall and optional bucket seats.

1962: Nissan debuts its first utility vehicle with the introduction of the Patrol. They decided to use TV hero Roy Rogers and the spokesman to get this new vehicle line off the ground in style. They pitched it as the world’s most powerful and most advanced 4-wheel drive. It had 145hp and a huge 400cc 6 cylinder engine.

1966: The first Japanese-owned production facility in North America, Nissan Mexicana manufactures its first vehicle.

1867: The 2000 Roadster, which became the most desired Datsun among collectors is also the first Japanese production sports car to come with a a 5-speed, 150hp engine. Datsun only produced 1000 of the 2000 Roadsters. If you were lucky enough to one one of the first 10, then you have one of the racing versions with a light weight body.

1968: Nissan launches the first car styled for the US market named the Datsun 510 sedan. This sedan took into account what the market in the US thought was nice when it came to its design.

1969: Datsun introduces the “Z” as a 1970 model. This model had more comfort features that European’s had in their cars for years, such as added performance features, roll-ip windows, and in car heaters. At an affordable price the 240Z become the best selling sports care in the world easily beating the Corvette in just 10 years on the market.

1971: Annual sales in the United States pass the quarter-million mark. Nissan also establishes itself on the race-track: the BRE 510 wins the SCAA 2.5 liter Trans Am Championship in 1971, claiming Nissan’s first professional racing championship. It proceeds to dominate the series, winning 15 out of 21 events. Meanwhile, another 510 wins the East African Safari, while yet another wins the American Rally Championship in 1971. Today, the 510 enjoys a cult-like following and is still active in SCAA club racing.

1972: The civilian 510 introduces a new concept car; a 4-door sports sedan that is great for the family, seats 5, and is fun to drive. Nissan would go on to sell over 300,000 of the new car.

1973: The 1,000,000 Datsun is sold in the US

1975: Datsun becomes the leading US vehicle importer

1977: Nissan expands the idea of “the truck” by introducing the King Cab, the first extended cab pickup.

1979: Nissan Design International is established in La Jolla, Ca, to help design American concepts and style to the Nissan line of vehicles. Among the many creations was the popular Xterra SUV.

1980:Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corp is established in Smyrna, TN to keep up with the demand for Nissan vehicles in the US.

1981: Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp Financing is established in Torrance, CA.

1982: A King Cab desert racer, coppering as a HDRA/SCORE Class 1 Unlimited Vehicle packing 280hp, full-time 4wd, a new engine design, and 4-wheel fully independent suspension leads the way to new innovation for Nissan.

1983: Worldwide marketing of vehicles using the Nissan name begins.

1983: Nissan R&D is established in Michigan.

1985: The first Nissan Sentra rolls of the production line in Smyrna, TN.

1989: Nissan Launches the Infiniti line of luxury cars. NMMC produces int s 1,000,000 vehicles.

1989: Nissan gives back by starting the Summer Institute for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

1990: Nissan North America is established in Torrance, CA.

1991: Nissan takes a big step forward in green technology, leading its Alternative Fuel Vehicle to a California testing program, and unveiling the Future Electric Vehicle concept car.

1991: Nissan receives its first environmental award from the EPA.

1992: The Altima rolls off the assembly line in Tennessee.

1993: The 10th anniversary of manufacturing in the US. The Altima tops the list in sales and the Maxima surpasses 1,000,000 sold.

1995: Nissan introduces the 200SX and the 4th Generation Sentra.

1997: Nissan is named Best of the Best by thee EPA. NMMC is awarded the most productive plant in North America in the “Harbour Report” for the 4th year in a row.

1999: Nissan introduces the Frontier Crew Cab, the first compact truck with 4 full size doors.

1999: The Frontier, Xterra, and Pathfinder are named official vehicles of the LA County Lifeguards, giving them fame on the popular TV series Baywatch.

2003: The all-new Z makes a comeback and Nissan introduces its first full-sized truck, the Titan.

2005: Nissan launches the all new Frontier (the most powerful v6 truck in its class) and well as a new mid-sized Pathfinder with 3rd row seating and the second generation of the Xterra.

2007: Nissan introduces the newly designed Altima, and the Altima Hybrid.

2009: The Cube is introduced along with the Nissan GT-R in the North American market.

2010: the Nissan Juke and 100% electric Nissan Leaf is introduced.

Nissan In The News

In 2010, Nissan released its own hybrid technology no longer based on Toyotas.

On April 7, 2010, Daimler AG exchanged a 3.9% share of its holdings for 3.9% from both Nissan and Renault.

The Nissan Note and Qashqai in the UK are both produced at their UK factory in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. On January 9, 2009, it was announced that 1,200 jobs were to be cut at the Sunderland plant.

Nissan North America relocated its headquarters from Gardena, California to Nashville, Tennessee in July 2006.

On June 30, 2006, General Motors convened an emergency board meeting to discuss a proposal by shareholder Kirk Kerkorian to form an alliance between GM and Renault-Nissan.

On May 17, 2006 Nissan released the Atlas 20 hybrid truck in Japan.

The company’s head office moved from Tokyo back to Yokohama in August 2009.

On February 23, 2008 The Tamil Nadu state government signed a memorandum of understanding with auto manufacturing consortium, Mahindra-Renault- Nissan to set up a production unit at Oragadam in suburban Madras.

Nissan began development of fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs) in 1996 and launched limited lease sales of the X-Trail FCV in Japan in fiscal year 2003.

In 2002, Toyota and Nissan agree to tie-up on hybrid technologies, and in 2004, Nissan unveiled the Altima hybrid prototype.

Nissan Vehicle recalls

On March 2, 2010 Nissan announced the recall of 540,000 vehicles to fix brake pedals and gas gauges.

Certain 2008 to 2010 Nissan Titan pickups, Infiniti QX56 and Nissan Armada Sports Utility Vehicles, and some 2008 and 2009 Nissan Quest minivans are being recalled.

Nissan also announced the recall of several models of trucks and SUVs, including 2004–2006 Armadas and Titans, 2005–2006 Infiniti QX56s, and Frontiers, Pathfinders and Xterras made in August 2003 and June 2006. The recall was made in response to a risk that the electrical relays in the engine control modules for those vehicles may fail, possibly rendering the engine inoperable.
