The team name was chosen by a fan contest, but the franchise was given to the city of New Orleans on November 1, All Saints Day. The city was also famous for the song “When the Saints Go Marching In”. Saints was a natural pick for the team name

Bobby Hebert was drafted by the New Orleans Saints after playing in the USFL from 1983 until 1985. From 1985 until 1992, he was one of the team’s starting quarterbacks, leading the team to a number of victories and playoff games. Hebert was a Pro Bowl selection in 1993 and holds a number of USFL records from before his NFL days.

2. Doug Atkins – Defensive End
Doug Atkins was a star Defensive End while he played professional football from 1953 until 1969. He played for the New Orleans Saints during his last seasons, from 1967 until 1969. He made a name for himself while playing for the Chicago Bears. During his entire career, he was an eight-time Pro Bowler, a Pro Bowl MVP, a two-time NFL champion, four-time First Team All-Pro selection and six-time Second-Team All-Pro selection. Earl Campbell spent the majority of his career with the Houston Oilers, from 1978 until 1984. He became a New Orleans Saint in 1984, and finished his NFL career in 1985. Archie Manning, father of Peyton and Eli Manning, was the second pick during the first round of the 1971 NFL Draft. He played for the New Orleans Saints from 1971 until 1982.
