History of the Patriots
Where Did Patriots Get Their Name?
In 1959, Billy Sullivan, a businessman from Boston was awarded an American Football League (AFL) franchise football team. This was not won without a struggle. Football executives from the National Football League (NFL) were wary about giving Boston a football team, as the city had hosted five previous football teams, each of which moved or failed to generate enough business to continue playing.
The AFL sold a team to Sullivan for $25,000. Billy Sullivan asked locals for name suggestions, and the overwhelming majority chose the Boston Patriots. The team had no home field for a number of years, playing at Nickerson Field (Boston University), Harvard Stadium, Fenway Park and Alumni Stadium (Boston College) until 1971. In 1971, one year after merging with the NFL, the team’s name was changed to the New England Patriots. In the same year, the team moved to Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
