Los Angeles Dodgers: Facts, History, Stats, and Resources
History of the Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers were originally founded as the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1890. The team was originally named the Bridegrooms, because many of the teammates had recently become married. The name was later changed to Trolley Dodgers, which was eventually shortened to Dodgers. They remained in Brooklyn until 1958, winning a total of 12 National League Pennants from 1890 to 1958, and one World Series title (1955). In 1958, the team moved to Los Angeles, and by the end of their first season there, the team had claimed their second World Series championship title, winning the 1959 game against the Chicago White Sox. The team in the mid 20th century was strong, winning World Series championships in 1955, 1958, 1963 and 1965. They won again in 1981 and 1988. The team has not won a National League pennant since their last World Series win in 1988, having won only four West Division titles since that victory.
