Day 1: Cooking Food Lesson
Timing: 50 min. class
Materials: Copies for whole class – 2 yellow cake recipes (one whole and one in strips) What are we cooking activity, extra paper and pencils.

Presentation: I will start class off by asking the students to brainstorm their favorite foods to make. Then, I will call on them in random order to name a favorite food to make. This should elicit the students’ interest in the cooking food lesson. (5 min. S>T interaction) I will pass out a copy of the recipe for how to bake a yellow cake to each student. I will read the recipe aloud while the students follow along and then go over vocabulary that is unfamiliar to them by using mime and verbal explanation. I will go over pronunciation by saying words and asking the class to repeat them back to me. Some pictures are included in the recipe. (15 min. T>S interaction)

Practice: Students will be broken up into pairs and given the same recipe that is now cut into strips and placed out of order. They will be instructed to put the steps of the recipe in the correct order as a reading comprehension activity. (5 min. S>S interaction) Then, the students will be instructed to get into different pairs for the next activity, where they must unscramble two different recipes and write them in order (What are we cooking activity). The students will be given this printout as well as this one. (10 min. S>S interaction)

Production: Students will be arranged into groups of 4 and instructed to decide on one food item they all like and know how to cook. They will then create their own recipe for their food item and write instructions on how to make it, including ingredients. This will be turned in at the end. The groups will each pick one person to speak who will present the recipe to the class by reading aloud. To be continued next class if there’s not enough time. (15 min. S>S interaction)

Extra time activity: Students write out a recipe that they know individually and then the whole class exchanges recipes and discusses the different kinds of recipes that everyone came up with. (10 min. S>S interaction)

Homework: Students will look online and search to find a recipe that they are interested in but not familiar with. Bring into class next time and be prepared to discuss.
