Background and Company History of Intel Corporation
Intel Corporation is an American global technology company and the world’s largest semiconductor chipmaker based on revenue. It is the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors, the processors found in most personal computers.
Based in Santa Clara, California, U.S., Intel was founded on July 18, 1968, as Integrated Electronics Corporation by semiconductor pioneers and scientists, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. Noyce was nicknamed “the Mayor of Silicon Valley” and a mentor and father-figure of brilliant young entrepreneurs including Apple’s Steve Jobs. Widely associated with the leadership and vision of Andrew Grove, Intel combines advanced chip design capability with a leading-edge manufacturing capability. Originally known primarily to engineers and technologists, Intel’s “Intel Inside” advertising campaign of the 1990s was successful and its Pentium processor became a household name.
Intel makes motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphic chips, embedded processors and other devices related to communications and computing.
Intel was an early developer of SRAM and DRAM memory chips that represented the majority of its business until 1981. While it created the first commercial microprocessor chip in 1971, it was not until the success of the personal computer (PC) that Intel microprocessor became it’s primary business. This was mainly because IBM started using Intel microprocessor from 1981.
During the 1990s, Intel invested heavily in new microprocessor designs fostering the rapid growth of the PC industry. During this period Intel became the dominant supplier of microprocessors for PCs, and was known for aggressive and sometimes controversial tactics in defense of its market position, including a struggle with Microsoft for control over the direction of the PC industry.
By 1991, Intel was the #1 manufacturer in the world and in 1993, Intel introduced the first Pentium chip. In 2006, Apple, Inc. completed conversion of its product range to Intel processors.
In 2009, Intel became #9 in Top Ten Best Global Brands. Intel is a Fortune 500 Nasdaq-traded company whose stock is widely held.
