Hazardous Substances: Risks, Safety, and Health Hazards

  • Buffer

Hazardous substances are everywhere in the world around us. Every day we read more and more that there are dangers lurking within our homes in some of our cleaning supplies that are just under our sinks. However, the most hazardous substances are those that the average individual rarely comes in contact with but it is important to understand their risks in case of a accidental contact. Hazardous materials are now required to be labeled so that an individual is warned before coming in contact with a material that could cause harm.

Materials are labeled hazardous for different reasons. Some are respiratory carcinogens, causing cancer if inhaled for an extended period of time. Some are poisons that will kill an individual or animal rather quickly if ingested in a large enough quantity. Most of the top 20 ATSDR and EPA Hazardous substance list are used as pesticides to kill bugs and rodents from gardens and farming fields. The following is a list of those substances and a link to a resource that explains the danger of the material, the level at which the substance becomes hazardous, and the steps an individual can take to reduce the risk of serious injury if they come in contact with one.
