1. What are the Grammy Awards? When did they start?
The Grammy Awards are actually the nickname for the actual award, which is a Gramophone, or record player with a large amplification device in the share of a horn coming out of the side of the record player. The awards were originally called the Gramophone Awards, but the name was shortened to Grammy after it became the affectionate nickname for the trophy. 2. When were the Grammy Awards first telecast?
The Awards were first telecast in 1959 on NBC. The were part of the Sunday Showcase, a spot normally dedicated to broadcasting plays, television series’ and other shows. This was one year after the first Grammy Awards took place in 1958. The first telecast recorded shows in both New York and Los Angeles. Musicians were on hand at both locations to accept the various awards. In 1973, CBS purchased the rights to broadcasting the show, and from then on, the show aired on CBS rather than NBC.
3. Where do the Grammy Awards take place?
The Grammy Awards have taken place at a variety of locations since they were first held in 1958. These theaters rotated for a long time between Los Angeles and New York. They took place a couple of times in Chicago and Nashville as well. Theaters that have hosted the event over the last 53 years included the Hollywood Palladium, Felt Forum (NYC), Tennessee Theatre, Uris Theater, Shrine Auditorium, Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden and the Staples Center. Since 2004 the show has been hosted at the Staples Center. The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles hosted the most Grammy Awards, numbering 16, between 1978 and 1999. The Staples Center was completed in 2000, and hosted the show from 2000 to 2002, and then again from 2004 to 2010.
4. Who votes for the winners of the Grammy Awards?
The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences are in charge of choosing the initial list of Grammy nominees, and voting for the reward recipients or winners. Each member of the NARAS votes in each of the general fields, which include Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Additionally, the members need to vote in eight out of the remaining 30 fields for winners in whichever categories they choose. The judges are supposed to choose the topics and awards with which they are most familiar, so that the judging is based on education and fairness.

10. Who has won the most Grammy Awards?
Sir Georg Solti – With 31 individual Grammy Awards, Sir Georg Solti holds the title of the most Grammy Awards won by one person. He was the musical director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which unsurprisingly holds the record for the most Grammys won by a musical group, with a total of 60 of the awards. At the same time as he was the director in Chicago, Solti was the music director of the Orchestre de Paris from 1982 until 1975. He was the conductor of the famed London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1983. In his lifetime, Solti conduction 999 performances. His 1000th performance was never realized, as he died of a heart attack in September 2007, just before his 85th birthday.
