Background and Company History of Google

Google Inc. (Google) was founded in September 1998, by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, two post graduate students at Stanford University who put their PhDs on hold. The company offers Internet search, computing, and advertising technologies. Among other products and services, Google hosts and develops various Internet-based products, and generate profit mainly from advertising through its AdWords program.

The name “Google” is derived from a play on word “googol” denoting the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes. Google’s star has grown enormously, with a management team that represents some of the industry’s most experienced technologists. Sergey Brin is Google’s Technology President while Larry Page is Product President. Eric Schmidt was appointed CEO in 2001.
