Fishing Tip 6: How To Build A Fishing Rod Holder
How to build a fishing rod holder?
Building a fishing rod holder is an important activity for the professional fisherman and the fishing novice. A fishing rod holder is a shelf mounted to the wall that helps in organizing reels and rods. Having a fishing rod holder makes things easier to manage for the fisherman, extends the life of the rods and reels and ultimately increases the enjoyment of the fishing experience.
The standard fishing rod holder accommodates up to six fishing rods. If there is a need for a larger or smaller holder, the fisherman can simply accommodate the size to meet these requirements.
It is important to be safe when building a fishing rod holder. Make sure that the working area is clear from obstructions and that protective gear like gloves and eye protection is used when using a saw. Even with a small project, safety is paramount.
Before beginning, make sure to have a few items in order to make the process smoother. Required items are: a measuring tape, one piece of wood (2 inches X 12-3/4 inches and 1-1/4 inches thick), one piece of wood (6 inches X 12-3/4 inches and 1-1/4 inches thick), a saw (jig or band), drill with screwdriver bit, 2 L brackets, wood stain or paint, sandpaper and screws.
Once all the materials are in hand, it’s time to begin building the fishing rod holder. This “do it yourself (DIY)” project is fairly simple and, with a little persistence, will be a valuable exercise for any fishing enthusiast.
The first step to creating a fishing rod holder is to measure 1-1/2 inches from the end of the 2-inch wide board. With a pencil, draw a square that is 3/8 inch on a side. The shape needs to be located 1 inch into the board and 1 inch toward the end of the board. Repeat the shape across the board. When six are drawn, the first stage is completed.
Next, cut out the shapes with the saw. Sand the insides until they are smooth. The next step is to drill a hole 3/4 inch from the edge and one inch from the top of the 6-inch board. Repeat this to the other side of the board.
Next, stain or paint the boards, allowing them to dry completely before continuing with the project. Take the time here to decorate the holder, allowing for customization.
Once the boards are dry, attach the L bracket to the bottom of the back of the 2-inch wide board. Place the bracket 1 inch from the edge of the board. The front of the board has the inlets. There needs to be enough room in the L bracket to slide in the 6-inch board. Repeat to the other side.
Slide the 6-inch board in between the 2-inch board and the L bracket. The L bracket and the 2-inch board are the bottom of the fishing rod holder. Make sure that the holes on the 6-inch board are on top. Secure brackets with screws.
Finally, mount the fishing rod holder onto the wall by screwing the holes into the boards. Now all that needs to be done is to place the fishing reels and rods in the fishing rod holder, and everything is all set.
All the hard work pays off. Organizing fishing gear in one neat and tidy place in a personal fishing rod holder, which can be customized, makes fishing more special.
