Fishing Tip 5: How to Make a Fishing Net
How do you make a fishing net?
There is no single way to make a fishing net. There are many different processes and techniques that can be employed. Some sources would even say that by tying a few simple knots together, one is able to fabricate a fishing net. There are also a numerous amount of different materials that can be used. These materials can range from string to rope to types of plastics. Some materials might even be too effective. Strings that are too powerful tend to capture everything in the ocean not just fish.
A typical fishing net is made with synthetic fiber lines such as nylon rope. The top and bottom drag lines are usually three times the thickness of the actual net itself. A common thickness is 2mm for the net and 6mm for the drag lines. Commercial nets tend to have plastic or wooden booms at each end. These force the fish to the center of the net. The following are simple instructions on how to make a particular fishing net comprised of over 540 feet of nylon rope, foam fishing floats and two eye hooks.
The first step is to screw eye hooks into wooden posts or a wall 20 feet apart from each other. Then a piece of nylon string that is 6mm thick and 20 feet long is cut. One end of this piece of nylon is tied to the left eye bolt using a fisherman’s bend knot. Then one threads approximately 7 x 4 inch diameter foam fishing floats to the top of the line, knotting each float before and after. This prevents them from drifting along the line. A fisherman’s bend knot will need to be used again. One will need to tie the opposing end to the second eye hook and then place the floats proportionally along the chord.
Step two consists of creating 60 lines of 22m twine that are each 8 feet long. These are then folded in half. Using a larks head knot, each of these lines is attached 4 inches apart to the 6mm top line that was created in step one. Then a square knot is used to tie the right chord of the first pair of knotted lines to the left chord of the second pair. This should begin four inches towards the floor. This process is continued from left to right until the left chord of the second last line and right chord of the last line are reached. This exercise will produce the outer right and left lines of the net.
The third step is to add four inches along each vertical line and then repeat the process above until there are complete rows of knots every four inches. At every alternate row, one must ensure that the knots are tightly attached to the far right and far left of the outer lines. Using a lark’s head knot, one ties each line to the 20 foot long 6mm chord on the bottom row.
Step four is to attach split shot sinkers four inches apart at the bottom of the net. One will know if the steps have been followed correctly if the net hangs down approximately four feet when in the water and if the float successfully blobs on the water’s surface.
The fifth and final step is to untie one corner of the top line from an eye hook. Then a large knot needs to be tied at the end of the rope to prevent any slippage of floats off the line. Once this is done, the net is complete.
