How to string a fishing reel?

A fishing reel is known as a common fishing device that is used in conjunction with the deployment and recovery of a fishing line. It consists of a spool that is attached to an axle. Traditionally, fishing reels are used in the leisure sport known as angling, which is a method of fishing where the fishing reel function is a mechanism that stores, retrieves, and pays out the fishing line. Though fishing reels are most often found attached to a fishing rod, some fishing reels can be attached to the gunwale or transom of a boat. The earliest known concept of a fishing reel is taken from early Chinese paintings that date back to 1195 AD. In 1650 AD, fishing reels were designed in England, and by the 1760s, fishing reels became regular fixtures in various London tackle shops. The first fishing reel in the United States appeared in 1820 by George Snyder and it soon became a very popular design. There are numerous types of fishing reels including the underspin reel, spin cast reel, spinning or fixed spool reel, bait casting reel, and centerpin reel.

In any fishing reel, stringing the line is the most important task of any fisherman. Stringing a fishing reel is not a difficult task, but the fisherman needs to have patience and a sharp eye if he wants to get the job done right. If a line is not properly strung on the reel, it can create tangles in the line and cause a fisherman to lose his catch. If the fisherman is in a fishing tournament, losing a fish can be a big deal and is the difference between not just losing and winning, but also the thousands of dollars that are often at stake in these tournaments. Therefore, a properly strung reel is the most important thing. Here are the steps that can assist any fisherman in how to string a spinning reel.

First, remove the fishing line that is still attached to the reel, as by no means does any individual want to put new stringing line over the old (and a quick tip, the old line can be recycled). Clean the existing reel before stringing the new line from any oil and dirt that was collected under the previous line. A fisherman can go out and purchase some professional reel cleaning products, but a warm, damp towel can do the same thing.

Next is to take the new fishing line and carefully thread it through the rod’s guide holes. This assists in maintaining the line in a straight fashion as it is rolled onto the fishing reel. Then take a small portion of the line and attach it with a knot to the fishing reel’s spool. A recommended knot for this is a flat knot, like a square knot.

Finally, a fisherman should then put their thumb and index finger on the part of the line that is located at the front of the spool in order to keep the line straight. Once this is done, slowly begin to turn the fishing reel and commence winding the fishing line onto the spool. It is important to keep the line taut across the spool. However, do not stretch the line as it might break. Keep an eye out while winding the string for uneven wrapping or twisted lines, as this can prove to be detrimental while fishing. Double check, when completed, that the fishing line will leave the spool in a counter-clockwise fashion.

Here are two quick tips any fisherman should keep in mind when stringing their fishing reel. First, do not over-spool the fishing reel. Too much fishing line can cause future problems, and one of the biggest problems is tangling in the string. To best prevent over-spooling, maintain line levels between one-half to one-fourth of an inch before the rim of the reel. Second, if knotting and twisting is a common occurrence in the fishing line when spooling the reel, go to any local tackle shop and purchase fishing line conditioner to assist in spooling and providing additional protection to your string.
