How do you set up a fishing pole?

Prior to setting up a fishing pole, it is essential to have all the required materials. These include: a fishing rod, a fishing reel, test line, a bobber, a bobber stop, a small bead, a hook and a sinker.

The place where fishing will take place, as well as the type of fish being pursued, might lead to different variations when setting up a fishing pole. Thus, fishing in freshwater as opposed to sea water, deep sea fishing as opposed to surf fishing, fly fishing as opposed to boat fishing will all demand different variations when setting up the fishing pole. Similarly, the type of fish being pursued will demand different variations in fishing poles, and, more important, what kind of bait is to be used.

The description offered below is a basic form of setting up a fishing pole for freshwater fishing. The description will provide all the essential skills for setting up a fishing pole, with the capacity to make the necessary variations where appropriate.

First attach the fishing reel to the fishing rod. The reel should snugly fit into the reel seat, but do not make it too tight.

Next, spool the test line through the fishing reel. There are some fishing reels that can be purchased prespooled, thus making the process a bit easier.

Take the test line and thread it through the holes of the fishing rod. Make sure that the line leaves the fishing reel in a clockwise direction. It also is important to leave a lot of slack in the test line to allow for the proper placement of the rest of the equipment.

Next, slip the bobber stop onto the test line. The bobber stop is a small device usually made of rubber that prevents the bobber from sliding too deep. A small bead should also be threaded onto the test line under the bobber stop to prevent the bobber stop from slipping into the bobber once a fish is caught on the line.

Now slide the bobber up the test line. The bobber is usually placed up the test line at a length equivalent to a little less than the depth of the water where the fishing is taking place. Thus, if the water is 6 feet deep, place the bobber 5.5 feet up the test line. Doing this will prevent the line from dragging the bottom and getting caught in underwater growth.

Thread the hook through the test line and tie it on. If using an artificial lure, tie it on. Clip the sinkers onto the test line usually about 10 inches above the hook and at a space of 1 inch apart from the other. It is not advised to use one’s teeth to close the sinkers as they are usually made of lead. Further, if using live bait, then it is best also to use split shot to ensure that the live bait remains below the surface of the water.

Attach the desired bait to the hook, and fishing can begin.
