How does Christianity Increase Its Following?

Christianity has always sought to increase its numbers through telling non-Christians about Jesus and then calling on them to repent and follow him. The religion’s adaptability to new technologies is responsible for its tremendous growth over two thousand years, and many methods of evangelism are used today to bring the message of Jesus Christ to the world.

What Are Tent Revivals?

People who live in certain parts of the United States are accustomed to seeing tent revivals advertised at least once a year on the signs of select churches. As the name implies, a tent revival is held outside under a large tent. Usually a guest preacher is invited to the event and he will speak every evening on sin and salvation through Christ Jesus. Singing accompanies these events as well as an altar call, that point in the service where the preacher invites anyone to come to the front to pray to believe in Jesus or rededicate his or her life to Christ.

Tent revivals can be traced back to the evangelistic campaigns of the nineteenth century, especially those that Charles G. Finney led. Finney was famous for appealing to the emotions of the crowd and popularizing innovations like the anxious bench, a seat between the back of the meeting and the front where sinners could sit and wrestle over whether or not they should keep coming to the altar.

What are Finney’s Methods?

Yet Finney’s methods are employed today in churches that would otherwise consider his theological views heretical. Many churches, especially in the Baptist tradition, will have an altar call at the end of every service and tend to view the preaching on Sunday mornings as a primary vehicle for evangelism. Others disagree, saying that while people may indeed hear and believe the gospel for the first time on Sunday morning, the preacher’s main task is to address those who are already Christians.

What is Seeker-Sensitive Worship?

Seeker-sensitive worship is an evangelistic method that takes the idea of worship as the place for evangelism to the extreme. Churches that engage in this kind of evangelism design their services to appeal to non-churchgoers, often filling them with secular music, movie clips, skits, and other such things. Many churches that have adopted this method of evangelism have greatly increased their attendance, but have also seen the knowledge of their congregations decrease.

What are the Most Effective Forms Of Evangelism?

The most effective means of evangelism, generally speaking, continues to be the one-on-one sharing of the gospel between friends. This often involves the Christian telling his non-Christian friend about what Jesus has done in his life and then inviting the friend to make a decision for Christ.

What is Friendship Evangelism?

Friendship evangelism is often used to describe the one-on-one evangelism mentioned previously, but one-on-one evangelism can occur between relative strangers. Large numbers of Christians go door to door in their cities and share the gospel, many times using a program called Evangelism Explosion, which Dr. D. James Kennedy developed.

Church Youth Groups Are Another Form of Evangelism

Even as personalized evangelism continues, the church continues to come up with innovative ways to take its message outside the walls of its sanctuaries. Church youth groups will put on weekend retreats in which teenagers in the church stay overnight and bring along their non-Christian friends. Opportunities for play and preaching abound, all with the aim of presenting Jesus to those who do not know him. Outside the youth group, cruises designed for Christian singles are often effective evangelistic opportunities. Here single Christian adults and their non-Christian friends enjoy both a vacation and a time of ministry to their souls.

Time prevents us from describing street theater and the many other ways Christians attempt to preach the gospel to the watching world. But if human beings have invented an activity, the chances are that Christians have found a way to evangelize others through it.
