History of the Cleveland Browns

Where did Cleveland Browns get their name and why are they called it?
In 1945, the Cleveland Browns held a contest to name the team. Fans chose Browns as the new team name, recognizing their first coach and general manager Paul Brown. Brown suggested another name, and the team tried to name themselves the Panthers. The Panthers name, however, was owned by another Cleveland businessman, and so the name of the team became the Browns, as originally selected.
