Chicago Cubs: Facts, History, Stats, and Resources
History of the Chicago Cubs
In 1876, the Chicago White Stockings were one of eight teams selected to be in the National League by William A. Hulbert, the president of the organization and the owner of the Chicago team. During their first season in 1876, Chicago won the National League Championship. In its early years, the Chicago White Stockings became a dynasty, winning six of the first eleven titles in the sport.
In 1902, a newspaper called the team the “Cubs,” and in 1907, the team officially adopted the nickname. In the same year, the team wins their first World Series title. They won the championship again in 1908, the first team to win back-to-back World Series championships. However, the team has not won the World Series since 1908. In the 100+ years that have passed between the Cubs’ last win and present day, the team has seen winning and losing seasons. Their popularity and fan base, however, much like the Boston Red Sox, has always remained steadfast alongside their Chicago team. In 2007 and 2008, the Cubs won National League titles, but they were not able to advance to the championship series in either year.
