Babe Ruth: A Brief Biography, Facts, and Resources

  • Buffer

George Herman Ruth, who would later be known as Babe Ruth, was born in the city of Baltimore in February of 1895. His parents, Kate and George Herman Ruth Senior, owned a bar where they spent many hours working to support the family. When George turned seven years old his parents relinquished custody of him to the missionaries who operated a school for boys called St. Mary’s. Though George’s childhood at the school was a lonely one, St. Mary’s is where he discovered his love of baseball. On the school’s baseball team George was able to nurture his pitching, catching, and hitting skills. Then in 1914 George came to the attention of Baltimore Orioles’ manager Jack Dunn. According to the biography of Babe Ruth his Baltimore teammates gave George the nickname Babe because they thought of this talented youngster as, “Jack’s newest babe.” George, the gifted teenager who loved baseball, was on his way to becoming the legendary Babe Ruth.

After five months of playing for the Baltimore Orioles’ team Babe Ruth went to pitch for the Boston Red Sox. During his time with the Red Sox he set a new pitching record for scoreless innings. Shortly thereafter, Babe Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees team for an astounding $125,000. In addition, the popularity of Babe Ruth as a New York Yankee brought millions of fans to the games and led to the opening of Yankee Stadium.
